Day 1

Catch your Day flight from London Heathrow to Lima.

On arrival you will be met and driven to Second Home.

Day 1 – Day 2

1 Night at Second Home, Lima, on a bed & breakfast basis

Second Home is the only small stylish boutique guesthouse in Lima. Located in the heart of Barranco, Lima’s art district and with stunning views to the Pacific Ocean from the pool and terrace and 3 of the bedrooms – Second Home is a one off.  Owned and managed by a well know Peruvian artist Victor Delfin with his wonderful artwork displayed throughout the guest house and adjacent gallery. Rooms are spacious and classically and coolly designed simple white walls and wood flooring, lots of light and high ceilings. Just 5 rooms made Second Home feel very intimate and very homely which is just what all the other traditional hotels in Lima lack. There’s a choice of either ocean view or garden view but if we’re unable to get you an ocean view room the garden, terrace and pool are easily accessible and are a delight. Excellent restaurants nearby and Lilian (Victor’s daughter) will do everything to make your stay as welcoming and informative as possible.

Room Facilities:  TV, radio, air-con, heating, frigobar, phone, safe.

Activities nearby: Restaurants, bars, transport links to city centre.

To escape to verdict: Wonderful place to stay for all the right reasons but with only 5 bedrooms sometimes it’s hard to find space!

Day 2

Transfer back to the airport. Flight to Puerto Maldonado. Transfer to lodge.

Day 2 - Day 4

3 Nights at Posada Amazonas, Rainforest Expeditions, Amazon Lodges, (from Puerto Maldonado) on a full board basis

Posada Amazonas is the first lodge and shortest distance from the airport. The journey takes around 45 minutes on motorised canoe. The lodge is rustic with 30 double/twin rooms housed in 6 separate wood and cane blocks. Rooms are private but not soundproof with one side completley open to truly experince the sounds and smells of the rainforest (mosquitoes are not a problem in this area but beds do have nets). The rooms do have their own bathrooms with cold water only and a drape sepatates the sink, shower and loo. Communal areas are sociable, open and spacious and include a bar, dining room, reception area and interpretation centre. The guides are excellent and undertake a rigorous training process ensuring all aspects of life in the rainforest are covered, interpreted and enjoyed by guests.

Excursions are on a 10:1 ratio when the lodge is full but if a guest requires a specialist guide this can be arranged in advance, there are specialist birding, adventure, Community, kids, photography and guides specialising in the parrots. Posada Amazonas is ideal for those who haven’t got much time and so need a more accessible lodge. It’s also great for those who want an introduction to the rainforest and on a returning trip may feel like venturing further upstream to a remoter area.

Room Facilities: Open jungle view, mosquito net, bathroom separated by drape, bedside tables, hammocks or lounge chairs.

Shared Facilities: Excursions, dining room, bar.

Activities nearby: Canopy Tower, trails/hikes through the rainforest, Parakeet clay lick, community visit, handicraft workshop, farm visit, night walks, Harpy Eagle nest visit, nearby lakes.

To escape to verdict: A great introduction to life in the rainforest and the most accessible and closest to Puerto Maldonado. Excellent guides, a wide variety of excursions and rainforest immersion. Simple but authentic lodging.

Amazonia

The Amazon region is another incredible area of Peru adding to the country’s immense natural diversity. Here in the steamy lowlands of Peru you’ll find isolated lakes in the sub tropical moist forests, teaming with wildlife. The lakes act as an oasis for caimans, giant river otters, puma, jaguar and tapir and of course endless species of bird including the bright vibrant feathers of the chattering macaws and the soaring giant harpy eagles. Like most of the Amazon regions in South America there are threats from loggers, gold and oil prospectors but conservation groups also have a high profile and presence. Tourism is one of the ways to help preserve this fragile environment and this can best be achieved by staying at one of the award winning Rainforest Expedition Lodges.

Day 3-4

Excursions, educational talks, relaxation and immersion in the rainforest experience.

Day 5

Boat back to Puerto Maldonado and short flight to Cusco.

Day 5 - Day 6

2 Nights at Casa Andina San Blas, Cusco, on a bed & breakfast basis

Located in the quieter artistic quarter of Cusco, the Casa Andina San Blas has 38 rooms (one of the smaller of the larger hotel offering in Cusco!).

Built in the 18PthP Century for Cusco it’s new! But still has a wonderful central courtyard and has been sympathetically and authentically restored into a comfortable and cosy hotel.

Its great advantage is the wonderful vistas of Cusco, especially at night. And the views are experienced from most of the bedrooms.

There’s a cosy restaurant and bar with open fires and the courtyard is a great place to hang out with your new alpaca hat and sweater on at night.

There’s a very nice atmosphere and the staff are particularly friendly. It’s a great mid range option and the views of Cusco quite stunning.

Room Facilities:  TV, phone, wall to wall carpeting, heating, safe, hairdryer

Shared Facilities: Courtyard, bar, restaurant.

Activities nearby: Plaza de Armas, shops, restaurants, historic sites.

To escape to verdict:  Our favourite of the Casa Andina collection in Cusco for it’s small size, location, great views and friendly service.

Cusco

All trips to Peru have to include Cusco. It’s the capital and gateway to the Inca Empire and a place to acclimatise before the Inca Trail. It’s a bustling Gringo town and a taste of the last frontier. You’ll truly feel you’ve arrived in Peru when you hit Cusco. The atmosphere is alive with the Quechua people, markets, textile shops, the smell of maize and potatoes, mothers with babies slung over their shoulders marching proudly with their black pillar box hats. Colonial cathedrals mix with ancient Inca fortress walls and narrow paved streets. Wander the markets, laze in a coffee shop, browse in a bookshop, be tempted by art galleries and spend hours soaking in the atmosphere.

Day 6

Free day in Cusco to acclimatise and get prepared for the Inca Trail.

Day 7

Transfer to the Sacred Valley and the Sol Y Luna Lodge.

Day 7 - Day 8

2 Nights at Sol Y Luna Lodge, Sacred Valley, on a bed and breakfast basis

Located 1 km from the town of Urubamba and in the heart of the Sacred Valley, the Sol Y Luna (Sun and Moon) lodge is a perfect place to base yourself for all the ‘other’ Inca sites in the Sacred Valley as well as Machu Picchu which can be visited from the train station at Ollantaytambo or the famous Inca Trail from KM88.  The Sacred Valley has SO much to offer and enjoy and not just pure sightseeing or strenuous treks. It’s also an ideal place to enjoy rural life and experience the local Quechua villages and culture. The Sol Y Luna makes this very easy and their activity centre can arrange everything you desire from mountain bike tours, paragliding, horse riding, walks and treks, bird watching and tours out to the impressive but lesser known Inca sites. There are 28 circular bungalows or muyus in pretty gardens surrounded by a wall. Simple white washed walls inside, tiled floors, very cosy with a sense of privacy, veranda and chairs outside to enjoy the pure Andean air. Wonderful separate Spa with fully equipped gym, sauna, steam, Jacuzzi and treatments.

Room Facilities:  Private veranda, telephone, safe, hairdryer, (the suites have TV and DVD)

Shared Facilities: Restaurant, bar, Spa, group activities/excursions if you wish, ranch, gardens.

Activities nearby: Inca sites, Quechua villages and handicrafts, nature trails, bridle paths, trekking

To escape to verdict:  An excellent option to kick back from the sight seeing and bustling city of Cusco and enjoy the attractions of the Sacred Valley, peace and tranquillity. More of a relaxed holiday atmosphere, great for families and those who want to be active but equally want to relax in the Spa or read a book on the veranda.

Day 8

Free day to enjoy the facilities at the lodge or venture further a field.

Day 9

Inca Trail

You’ll be collected and driven out to the Sacred Valley to KM82 where you’ll begin the Inca Trail. This is where the road ends and a bridge crosses the Rio Vilcanota and you’ll be on your way for your first day’s hike. It’s a good start but you’ll notice the altitude and there is an initial steep ascent. It’s a good first day to find your step and pace yourself. The following day is the toughest climb, the infamous Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,200 metres.

Day 10

It will depend where you have camped but today is the long steep climb to Dead Woman’s Pass. It’s a long slow ascent of around 2-3 hours at high altitude but such a reward once you’ve completed and feel as if you’re on top of the world. It’s a steep descent down the other side but with magnificent views and scatterings of Inca Ruins.

Day 11

The final full trekking day takes you along the paved Inca Highway and through stone tunnels opening up to spectacular views of the Vilcabamba range. The final campsite has slightly more facilities! And tourist bathrooms!

Day 12

On the fourth and final day you’ll rise early to catch the sunrise at the incredible Inca fortress site of Machu Picchu. Don’t be surprised if you arrive in mist but wait at the Sun Gate for the sunrays to make their way through the cloud as the vision is absolutely spell bounding and extremely atmospheric. Enjoy the ruins as much as you like before heading down for a well earned shower and rest at the beautiful and peaceful Pueblo Hotel in the town of Aguas Calientes.

Day 12 - Day 13

2 Nights at Machu Picchu Pueblo, Aguas Calientes, on a full board basis

Pueblo translates to village in Spanish and the Machu Picchu Pueblo is just that. A charming ‘village of casitas and villas spreadout in luch gardens at the base of machu Picchu.

There are 85 separate casitas and villas scattered throughout lush gardens where 372 different orchid species have been counted, 172 bird species and 111species of butterfly. It’s a botanist and zoologists dream.

Rooms are spacious and have been carefully designed using lots of Andean fabrics and colours. The Superior deluxe rooms all have their own fireplaces, as do most of the suites and the luxurious Suites Inkaterra with their own heated plunge pool and outdoor shower.

In a beautiful natural setting with the banks of the Urubamba River rushing and gushing past the windows and the backdrop of the stunning emerald mysterious mountains yet only a stone throw from the railway station and a short walk to the terminus for the buses up to Machu Picchu.

The in house spa offers a unique Andean sauna, massage and foot aromatherapy.

The Pueblo is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World association.

Room Facilities:  Anti allergic pillows, bath robes, slippers, dining area, (fireplaces in superior deluxe rooms).

Shared Facilities: Restaurant, gardens, nature trails, Spa, internet.

Activities nearby: Nature walks, Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes town and hot springs.

To escape to verdict:  A wonderful place to stay and well worth 2 or 3 nights to enjoy the nature trails, ambiance and explore Machu Picchu more leisurely.

Machu Picchu

It’s the must see site of Peru and will not disappoint. The best ways of arrival are from the 4 day Inca Trail Hike or waking up in comfort at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge and joining the trekkers before the day trippers. Machu Picchu is as awesome as you’d imagine but it’s also the incredible sheer mountain slopes and lush forests that set the stage for the most famous Inca Citadel in South America.

Day 13

Enjoy the hotel facilities and grounds or spend some more time at Machu Picchu.

Day 14

Take the first morning train out of Aguas Calientes back to Cusco and 2 nights at the Hotel Casa Andina San Blas.

Day 15

Free day to relax in Cusco.

Day 16

Day 16 - Day 17

1 Night at Casa Andina Private Collection - Puno, Lake Titicaca, on a bed & breakfast basis

One of the only options when staying in the town of Puno.

The hotel has 46 rooms and is located right beside the lake. Not all rooms are lake view but we will request them.

The food in the restaurant has been particularly recommended and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Rooms are on the smaller side but comfortable and warm with heaters.

The front desk is particularly helpful with onward arrangements and excursions.

Room Facilities:  Some lake views, Cable TV, heater, safe deposit box, coffee kit.

Activities nearby: : Cruises on Lake Titicaca,  visiting the Titicaca islands,  bird watching, riding, mountain biking, archaeological  sites.

To escape to verdict:  The best option if staying in the town of Puno.

Day 17

Early morning departure by boat for the trip across Lake Titicaca via the Uros Islands and the island of Taquille arriving at Suasi around 1pm.

Day 18-19

2 Nights at Suasi Island, Lake Titicaca, on a full board basis

A complete to escape to!

The rustic 24 roomed Casa Andina Private Collection is on the remote, magical island of Suasi in Lake Titicaca.

It’s a complete hideaway retreat. A very special, tranquil private island where guests can roam at their leisure or paddle around at their ease.

A place to completely cut off from the world and modern life – at Suasi you can truly disconnect.

It’s also a place of learning and understanding. You’ll get to know the culture of island life in Titicaca, the flora and fauna, the extremities and how to survive in this harsh environment at altitude. Take a leisurely trail around the island, or a stroll on the beach or just sit and contemplate in a very special place – well worth the long journey to get there!

Relax in rustic comfort with wonderful cuisine with herbs and vegetables from the island organic garden.

For more privacy and perfect for honeymooners there is also a riverside Andean cottage with open fires and own butler service.

Room Facilities:  Simply styled to match the ambiance of the island, all have superb lake views, en-suite, table and chairs, bedside lights.

Shared Facilities: The island! Restaurant, bar, gardens, sunloungers, games room, Internet, small Andean sauna and massage room.

Activities nearby: walks around the island, trekking, nature walks with guide, birdwatching, canoeing, sailing, stargazing at night, learning about local culture and the Titicaca environment.

To escape to verdict: A delightful isolated island retreat to completely switch off. It does take a long time to get there and once you’re there that’s it – just the island but it’s WORTH it in every possible way.

Lake Titicaca

The highest navigable lake in the world. Lake Titicaca is almost like being on another planet! The lake sits on a high plateau with the Andes almost below it! It’s an incredible geological sight and another wonder of Peru. The town of Puno which serves the lake is not so attractive. A slow boat out to the islands of Amantani or Taquile makes for a fascinating day to visit the Quechua island communities and the Uros reed island people is a unique yet quite touristy experience. Lake Titicaca is a good place to stop en-route to Bolivia.
