Day 2 – Day 5

3 days at Mumbo Island on a Full board with all meals, snorkelling and kayaking included.

Mumbo Island is an exclusive camp situated on a pristine and otherwise-deserted tropical island floating on the clear waters of Lake Malawi. The camp comprises five large safari tents, each fully furnished with its own shaded view-deck and hammock, and blending seamlessly into the lush foliage. There is a dining area, bar and water sport gazebo, all of timber, thatch and canvas, and adhering to the principles of eco-architecture.

The Island lies within an exclusive concession area, in turn part of the Lake Malawi National Park, the first freshwater marine reserve in the world. With waters that are so crystal clear, the diving and snorkelling are among the best in Lake Malawi.

Guests can relax in tranquil surroundings with delicious cuisine, lying in hammocks or gently floating in the waters; but for the more energetic there is a variety of activities: excellent sea kayaking, snorkelling and scuba facilities enable the active guest to interact with an impressive piece of nature: exploring the granitic islands in a freshwater Rift Valley lake; birders will enjoy the abundant Fish Eagles; and snorkellers can view enormous numbers of the Cichlid fish species; these small, colourful fish have adapted to so many variations that they are considered of comparable importance to the Galapagos finches in the study of evolution.

Electricity and water: There is no electricity on the island. The kitchen works off gas, and all lighting is by means of hurricane lanterns. All water is purified, although the necessity of this is debatable.

Activities:  Sea kayaking, Snorkelling, Swimming, Scuba diving, Nature trails and Quality hammock time

Suggested daily schedule:  Freedom and quality island time - together with a good dose of healthy outdoor fun - is what visits to Mumbo Island are all about. The only fixed items on the schedule are meals, and guests are otherwise free to choose between activity, exploration and leisure. Highly recommended are pre-breakfast swims, which redefine the term "refreshing," and sunset kayak circumnavigations of the island.

Meals:  Meal times are flexible with respect to activities and arrival and departure times. A hearty breakfast of fruit salad, freshly baked bread, eggs and bacon sets the tone for the day. Lunches and dinners feature an array of salads, fresh fish, chicken and vegetable casseroles, curries, stir-fries and pasta dishes.

Drinks and extra payments:  Drinks, scuba diving and tips are not included in the nightly tariffs, and these accounts must be settled before departure.  Payments for such extras can be made by credit card or with US Dollar, British Pound, Euro or Malawi Kwacha cash.

Laundry services are free of charge.

 Day 5

Transfer to Liliongwe airport for your flight to Likomo Island. On arrival you will be met and transferred to Kaya Mawa.

Day 5 - 10

5 nights at Kaya Mawa on a full board basis (all meals and with non motorised sports included. Excludes drinks and motorised sports)

Likomo Island is the larger of two small islands situated in the far north of Lake Malawi, on the east of the Lake and very close to the Mozambique coastline. To visit the island is to step back in time. Just 17 square kilometres with one small dirt road and two vehicles, the local people survive largely by fishing, and rice and cassava farming. The island has hundreds of huge baobab trees and a number of glorious sandy beaches and rocky coves. The waters are crystal clear throughout the year and the diving and snorkelling is among the best in Lake Malawi.

Kaya Mawa Lodge is situated on the south-western tip of the Island at the head of a crescent-shaped bay, surrounded by mango trees and ancient baobabs. Translated as “Maybe tomorrow” in the local Tonga dialect, the lodge uses the stunning natural surroundings of beach, rock, island and lake to create a lodge of unique character, imagination and very special ambience. With no machinery available on the island, Kaya Mawa Lodge was built entirely by hand, in partnership with the local community.

It consists of ten stone and teak-framed thatched cottages set into a granite headland. There is a honeymoon house tucked away on its own private island that is reached by boat or a wooden walkway. Each cottage faces the lake and has a 7- by 6-foot mahogany four-poster bed, a shower, a sunken stone bathtub and a loo with a view. The view from the shower in the honeymoon suite defies description. All the cottages have private terraces with direct access to the water, and some can only be reached by walkways built over the lake.

The stunning setting of the lodge and the unique comfort of the rooms means that many guests choose to make relaxation their main activity, but enough activities are on offer to keep guests busy. Scuba, snorkelling, swimming, sailing and visits to the local villages are part of the experience. Day trips to Mozambique can be arranged. Access is by air or by boat.
